Important topics include:

- Basic Concepts of Chemistry: Atomic structure, periodic table, chemical bonding.
- Thermodynamics: Laws of thermodynamics, enthalpy, entropy.
- Organic Chemistry: Functional groups, reaction mechanisms, stereochemistry.

This section consists of 15 questions to be attempted for 25 marks.

3. Life Sciences Sections

Any two of the following life science units can be attempted by the candidate:

-Biochemistry (XL-Q):

Structure and function of biomolecules (proteins, nucleic acids).
Enzyme kinetics and catalysis.
Metabolic pathways (glycolysis, Krebs cycle).

-Botany (XL-R):

Plant systematics and taxonomy.

Plant anatomy and physiology.
- Plant Developmental Biology.

- Microbiology (XL-S):

- Diversity and classification of microorganisms.
- Techniques in microbiology (PCR, culture methods).
- Role of microorganisms in ecosystems.
- Zoology (XL-T)
- Diversity and classification of animals.
- Genetics and evolution.

- Physiology of animals.
- Food Technology (XL-U)
- Food microbiology and preservation.
- Nutrition aspects of food.
- Food safety regulations.

There are 20 questions in each life science section which will be translating into the total of 30 marks each in the case of total scores obtained.

Exam Pattern

GATE 2018 is offered as a Computer-Based Test (CBT) that will last three hours. Total questions in the test will be 65, and maximum marks for all those questions will be 100 marks. Type of question is given below:

- MCQs: These have four choices with only one correct answer.

- MSQs: These will offer more than one possible correct answer.
- NAT: The candidate is required to enter a numerical value as his answer.
