GATE Life Science Exam Pattern 2025: A Detailed Overview

Exam Pattern

- For a 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be negative marked for every incorrect answer.

- For a 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark will be negative marked for each wrong answer.

- MSQ or NAT-type questions carry no negative marking.


Section-wise Distribution

The following is a tabular section-wise distribution of marks as follows:

In the GATE Life Science exam, General Aptitude section contains 10 questions consisting of 15 marks in total, that is 5 questions for 1 mark each and 5 questions for 2 marks each. The Chemistry section, or XL-P, has total 15 questions consisting of 25 marks that include 5 questions for 1 mark and 10 questions for 2 marks each. The Life Science section allows candidates the choice to pick any two out of the five segments (Q-U) and consists of 30 questions, which carries a total of 60 marks: 10 questions carrying a score of 1 mark each and the rest carrying a score of 2 marks each.
